MC Authority

Getting an MC Authority is your first step to opening a trucking company. The reason for this is that when you run interstate you will need an MC Authority.

Interstate vs Intrastate

Interstate trucking is when your truck goes over state lines. Intrastate trucking is when your truck only delivers freight in one state and does not cross state lines.

So for all the trucks that run interstate you will need an MC Authority before you can get your IRP plates.

The second important requirement to be aware of is the need to have a physical office in the state where you want to have your base IRP jurisdiction. This means if you have California IRP plates then you will have to show proof of office in California.

Acorrding to California Department of Motor Vehicles:

Qualifying for Apportioned Registration

To register your vehicle(s) under the provision of the IRP, you must have: an established place of business in California, where mileage is accrued by the fleet, and where the operational records of the fleet are maintained or can be made available; and each fleet must consist of one or more commercial vehicles, operating interstate (travel in two or more jurisdictions).
